I’ve worked on lots of zines in the past: some of them accepting submissions, some of them based on my own work. My main ambition at the moment is to become a published photojournalist, but opportunities are far and few between (unless you count unpaid internships and work experience). So, with that same DIY attitude I’ve used to make my zines in the past, I’ve decided to start my own magazine.
Yes, an actual magazine.
Parallel Magazine will be a feminist-themed magazine covering modern pop culture, politics, craftivism, and the arts, aimed at young women aged 15-30. It will not only focus on feminist theory but will also subvert the format of celebrity-centric magazines to discuss problems in popular culture. The working title Parallel is based on the concept that feminist discourse and theory is currently running parallel to popular culture and politics. The two do not meet, nor do they intertwine. For women’s rights to be addressed and discussed they need to intersect with that which captures the attention of modern society.
I’m looking for people who would like to be part of the team. I need people who are dedicated, ambitious, and talented. I’m not looking for people who are just looking to submit their work at this point – I’m looking for actual staff members who will work on the magazine and be part of a hard-working team. The magazine will initially be put together through emails, phone calls, and Skype – there is no necessity for you to be located nearby. People who are terrible at answering their emails or won’t answer on Skype, or are too busy with other things, need not apply. It will be unpaid to begin with, but when (when, not if) the magazine starts to generate some kind of income these positions will become paid. Realistically that will take a long time. I’m looking for people who can be patient.
The plan is to get everything for the first issue drafted up, before starting a Kickstarter project to get funding for things like printing, a website, travel costs for any events or interviews, launch night, as well as to secure enough funding for future issues. The magazine will initially be sold on a subscription basis, as well as people being able to buy individual copies online, and hopefully will be sold in some independent magazine/print stores. Eventually we’d hopefully find a distributor to get it out there to the general public and on newsstands.
These are the job roles I’m looking to fill:
1. Columnists – max. of 5, ideally 1 of whom is based in London.
This is a writing job. Each columnist will decide out of a list of options their specific role on the magazine: it will then be their job to create content for their section of the magazine each issue. Columnists can also submit ideas for editorials, interviews, or investigative pieces they may want to write and will have a photographer assigned to them for that piece.
2. Photographers – max. of 5, ideally 1 of whom is based in London.
Photographers will be given assignments depending on the decided content of the magazine. These assignments will range from: covering events; working alongside a columnist to create an editorial/investigative piece; taking photographs at interviews; and creating images to work alongside articles, guides, and reviews. Photographers can also submit ideas for editorials or investigative pieces they may want to write and will have a writer assigned to them for that piece.
3. Illustrators – max. of 2
Illustrators will work very closely with the graphic designers to create content for the magazine and website. They are responsible for creating illustrations for the magazine such as cover images, pictures to go alongside articles, and other things like poster images and logos.
4. Graphic Designers – max. of 2
The graphic designers will put together the work of the illustrators, writers, and photographers by creating cohesive layouts for the magazine, website, posters, and business cards. Their main role will be creating the layout of the magazine. They will also work closely with the illustrators to create logos etc.
5. Researchers – max. of 2
The researchers will keep up to date with current affairs, as well as with popular culture and the arts. They must be able to provide summaries of news items, recommendations of artists to review or interview, and upcoming events. Their work will not actually be in the magazine itself but will contribute to the content.

There will be an opportunity for people to submit work for consideration in the magazine, but that will be advertised at a later date.
